Metal Hammer
UK No. 24 / Vol. 5 : Nov 19 - Dec 2. 1990
Every track's a winner, as the Goo Goo Dolls come back, older,
wiser and ever so slightly more mature. As a band this three piece
from Buffalo are once again blasting out three minute blazes of
power chords, glancing melodies, and wasted vocals, all conducted
with effortless poise and winsome dexterity. This is music for driving
to, this is music for sitting in a darkened room to, this is music
to grab a guitar and let it all hang out in front of your mirror
to.
Three repeated plays in and it suddenly occurs to me that the Goo
Goo Dolls have finally arrived at American FM nirvana and
are now a major label must. A frightening thought if Sonic Youth
are anything to go by, but then there is always that indie self-destruct
button festering away, buried down deep, which only has to threaten
to make its menace felt. Just listen to the savagely under produced
and over enthused slamming jam entitled 'Out Of The Red' and you
see what I mean. Monstrous. 4/5
